PODEMOS. New Politics and the Left in Spain

15 May 2011 – abbreviated 15M – has mythical signifance in Spain, comparable to May 1968. 15M started a period of great change in Spain, both at the national level with the creation of a new political organization, Podemos, and in many cities throughout the country, with the rise of local ‘civic platforms’ like Barcelona en Comú and Ahora Madrid.

The Podemos political project offers a left alternative to the neoliberal model of the European Union, as well as to rightwing populism that counters it.

In this book, the Dutch political scientist and activist Frans Bieckmann analyzes the roots, the identity and challenges of a new political movement that fights corruption, unemployment and inequality, and provides lessons for new political strategies all over Europe.
